Half of the population of Germany is at risk of sunburn
Federal Office for Radiation Protection publishes survey on UV protection for Euro 2024
Year of issue 2024
Date 2024.06.17
Date 2024.06.17
Around half of people in Germany (49%) have had a sunburn in the past 12 months. Among 18 to 34-year-olds, the figure was as high as eight out of 10. This was the result of a representative survey conducted by the Forsa Institute on behalf of the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS). Most respondents also reported that they would like UV protection measures to be provided at major sporting events such as the European Football Championships in the summer. Sufficient shade is mentioned particularly frequently.
Sunburns occur despite the fact that, according to the survey, 96% of people know that UV radiation can cause cancer. Seven out of 10 respondents consider UV protection to be important or very important.
However, in everyday life, during outdoor sports, at outdoor events, on walks, or when gardening, the topic is often neglected. "Sun protection is often a topic associated with holidays. Around 80% of people who use UV protection frequently take protective measures when on holiday, but only 42% do so at public outdoor events"
, says BfS President Inge Paulini. "One thing should be clear to everyone: even one sunburn is one too many. This is all the more true for children. Sunburns in childhood and adolescence considerably increase the risk of developing black skin cancer later in life. This risk can be easily reduced with three UV protection measures: avoid the sun, cover your skin, and apply sunscreen."
UV protection as a topic for event organisers
Especially for major sporting events such as the European Football Championships or running events, many respondents indicated that they would be happy if UV protection were included in the planning: 78% would like sufficient shade. Almost four out of 10 people would welcome information services such as information boards on the intensity of UV radiation or announcements when the sun’s rays are particularly intense. A similar number would like complimentary sunscreen to be provided in all cases. Only 13% believe that no sun protection measures are needed for major sporting events. The representative survey was conducted by Forsa on behalf of the BfS in April 2024 among 2,000 people over the age of 18.
Shade, shirts, and sunscreen – preferably in combination
Most respondents stated that they know and use various sun shading components. Sunscreen was the product most frequently used by 77% of respondents. Around 57% report that they avoid spending long periods in the sun. On the other hand, people rarely use clothing to protect themselves. Only 17% of respondents reported wearing long clothing to protect their skin from too much UV radiation.
"Optimum UV protection is usually a package of measures. Sunscreen is not the first choice. It is particularly important to avoid excessive exposure to UV radiation, seek shade, and wear the appropriate clothing, hats, and sunglasses. Sunscreen should be used for unprotected skin"
, says Paulini.
During the Men's European Football Championship in Germany (EURO 2024), the BfS will be providing complimentary sunscreen and information on current UV exposure in all 10 host cities under the motto "EURO 2024 UV-safe". The campaign is part of the commitment of the Federal Environment Ministry to a sustainable European Football Championship.
