UV protection in the car?

Car with passengers at the front and back, sun protection for the back side window Sun protection in the car

Anyone who spends time outdoors knows that they have to protect themselves from the sun. But what about in the car? Do car windows protect against UV radiation?

You are well protected from UV-B radiation in the car. It is blocked by the windows. That is why you don't get sunburnt in the car. But this protection is deceptive. While the windshields in the car largely protect against UV-A and UV-B radiation, side windows allow UV-A radiation to pass through more or less well.

UV-A radiation also causes skin damage

UV-A radiation causes premature skin aging and, in the worst case, skin cancer. In summer, UV protection is therefore also required in the car on long car journeys on sunny days. This applies especially to children, as children's skin is extremely sensitive to UV radiation.

Protective measures

UV-A radiation inside the car can be effectively reduced by UV films that are put on the side windows of the car, or window blinds or sun visors that are attached to the inside of the side windows of the car.

But be careful: Attaching such protective devices is not permitted within the driver's 180° field of vision, i.e. on the windshield and on the front side windows!
