EURO 2024 UV-safe

Shady areas, long-sleeved clothing, sunscreen: There are simple ways to protect yourself from too much UV radiation while exercising. So let's show sunburn the red card at the European Football Championship! With the EURO 2024 UV-safe campaign, the BfS supports those interested in fan zones and around the football festival. The campaign follows on from the campaign 2023 "Make your places UV-safe" for municipalities, daycare centers and clubs.

About the campaign

Man and woman in the football stadium with the slogan "2 who show sunburn the red card, UV protection is essential, no matter where you are. Home game for Europe."

Climate change can noticeably influence people's UV exposure. The number of sunny days tends to increase and the dose of UV radiation is increased in sunny years. The warmer weather is also attracting many people outdoors. This also affects sport. Anyone who is active outside or watches sporting events should particularly think about sun protection.

Football, as the favorite sport in Germany, plays an important role here and major events such as EURO 2024 can serve as a role model: celebratory mood in the fan zones of the 10 host cities and sporting euphoria should go hand in hand with easy-to-implement UV protection. The Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) is promoting this in all host cities with special campaigns under the motto "EURO 2024 UV-safe".

UV protection in municipalities and clubs

"We need a change in awareness when it comes to UV protection," is one of the demands of the Federal Office for Radiation Protection. "Climatic developments further underline the importance of the topic of UV protection," said BfS expert Dr. Cornelia Baldermann in the video about the UV campaign 2023.

UV radiation and climate change

Climate change is already having a noticeable impact on UV radiation and thus on human UV exposure. For example, the number of cloudless, sunny days increases and the UV dose is higher in sunny years. In addition, the number of days with feel-good temperatures is increasing: many people are tempted to go outside more often. On the whole, experts assume an increasing risk of skin cancer due to climate change. Effective protection against too much UV radiation should become a matter of course.
