The BfS Coordinating Offices

The tasks of the Coordinating Offices are laid down in the Radiation Protection Act (Strahlenschutzgesetz) - in combination with the "IMIS-Zuständigkeitsverordnung" - and in the Radiation Protection Ordinance (Strahlenschutzverordnung). These include, among other things, the review of measurement data collected within the framework of environmental monitoring (AVV-IMIS) and within the framework of emission and immission monitoring (REI), as well as the summary and documentation of these data. In addition, the control centres provide measuring procedures and organise intercomparisons for quality assurance.

Federal Coordinating Offices for monitoring radioactive substances in the environment

The radioactive fallout caused by the atmospheric nuclear weapons tests in the 1950s and 1960s required monitoring of the impact of radioactivity on humans and the environment. Radioactive substances in the environment are monitored by the states (Bundesländer) and by federal authorities. At the same time Federal Coordinating Offices have been established, which are responsible for the monitoring of specific environmental media.

Radioecology Laboratory

The Radioecology Laboratory measures the radioactive contamination in foods and environmental media conducts field investigations as well as laboratory experiments and develops radiochemical methods for the quick determination of alpha and beta emitters in foods and environmental media.

Federal Coordinating Office ENORM

The Federal Coordinating Office for questions of monitoring of the radioactivity at enhanced natural radioactivity (ENORM) was established in 2002. Sample analysis is performed in the facilities of the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) in Berlin.

Measurement comparison for portable ambient dose rate meters in June 2024

The Federal Coordinating Office for questions of monitoring of the radioactivity at enhanced natural radioactivity (ENORM) organises an annual measurement comparison for portable ambient dose rate meters in collaboration with Wismut GmbH in Reust, near Ronneburg, takes place on 18 and 19 June 2024. The registration deadline is 14 June 2024.
