Federal Radiological Situation Centre

A special crisis team known as the Federal Radiological Situation Centre is set up in the event of a radiological emergency. This centre is responsible for drawing up the radiological situation report, which includes information on the circumstances of the accident, the current radiological situation, and a forecast of its development. At the Federal Radiological Situation Centre, experts from various authorities and institutions work hand in hand at the federal level under the direction of the Federal Environment Ministry (BMUV). The centre uses systems including the ELAN electronic situation display and the decision-making assistant RODOS of the BfS.

People

How is the radiation exposure of the population determined after a nuclear accident?

In the case of a nuclear accident, the Federal Länder (federal states) establish emergency care centres in the affected areas after the passage of a radioactive cloud. People who have been in the area of the cloud can register and seek advice there.

Radiological Situation Report

In a radiological emergency of supra-regional significance, the Federal Radiological Situation Centre continually assesses the possible impact on Germany in the form of a Radiological Situation Report. The Radiological Situation Report is a document specifically aimed at the federal and state authorities responsible for radiological emergency preparedness and response. It provides an important basis for decisions regarding measures to protect the population.

Decision support systems RODOS

The prognosis and decision support model RODOS ("Realtime Online Decision Support System") calculates the future environmental contamination and the expected doses to the affected population in a radiological emergency. RODOS is a part of the Integrated Measurement and Information System (IMIS) of the BfS.

ELAN information system – Electronic Situation Display

The web-based ELAN information system is an information platform that serves as a repository for knowledge from all institutions involved in emergency preparedness. It provides decision-makers at the federal and state level with quick, simultaneous and clearly structured access to all the information they need to assess the situation and to make decisions about protective measures in an emergency.
