The Competence Centre for Electromagnetic Fields

The transition to renewable energies will require the conversion and expansion of power grids. At the same time, the roll-out of the next generation of mobile communications technology, 5G, is currently underway, and an army of electrically powered vehicles are intended to usher in a new era of climate-neutral mobility. The Competence Centre for Electromagnetic Fields works in the interest of citizens to ensure that all of these schemes take suitable account of radiation protection issues from an early stage. In this context, the Centre sees itself as an independent mediator between the scientific community and the general public and serves as a neutral point of contact for both citizens and the authorities as well as other stakeholders.

The Competence Centre for Electromagnetic Fields

The Competence Centre for Electromagnetic Fields is part of the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS). In addition to pooling the BfS's expertise in relation to static and low-frequency electric and magnetic fields, as well as high-frequency electromagnetic fields, it seeks to intensify relevant research and communication activities.

Spotlight on EMF Research

Research reports and statements of the BfS

Here you will find research reports and statements of the BfS on comprehensive topics in the field of electromagnetic fields. Research reports and statements on individual topics in the field of mobile communications, power grid expansion, high-frequency fields, low-frequency and static fields can be found on the corresponding pages. You will also find the "Spotlight on EMF Research", which presents and evaluates individual studies.

Research

As it has done in the past, the BfS continues to initiate and support research projects dealing with various topics relating to electromagnetic fields. At present, these projects are primarily conducted within the framework of the research programme "Radiation Protection in the Process of Power Grid Expansion". The BfS has previously carried out a large-scale research programme on mobile communications, known as the "German Mobile Telecommunication Research Programme", and has plans for further projects on the subject. These pages are intended to provide you with information on completed, ongoing and future projects in the area of electromagnetic fields.
