Optical radiation New rules for the use of lasers, light, and the like outside medicine

The protection of health from non-ionising radiation is to be improved. Lasers, strong light sources, strong electromagnetic fields, and ultrasound will be more strictly regulated when used for non-medical purposes. The new rules enter into force on 31 December 2020.

Electromagnetic fields The BfS recommends low SAR values for mobile phones

"Smart" gifts under the Christmas tree are well received across all generations. Increasingly more devices being equipped with the new mobile communications standard – 5G. To ensure that only the eyes of loved ones – and not the Christmas gifts – radiate, the BfS advises people to make sure that the devices they buy have a low SAR value and are thus low in radiation.

Ionising radiation Malfunction at Finnish nuclear power plant Olkiluoto 2 – no release of radioactivity

According to the Finnish Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority, a malfunction occurred at the Finnish nuclear power plant Olkiluoto on 10 December 2020, leading to an emergency reactor shutdown in Unit 2 of the plant. All safety systems are reported to be operating perfectly. There is no risk to the general public in Germany.

When will all of the gaps in coverage finally be closed, aren't mobile communications harmful to health, and why do we need 5G in the first place? An information campaign on 5G and the expansion of the mobile communications network aims to help people understand the new generation of mobile communications and discover its potential, as well as tackling possible concerns at an early stage through open and transparent dialogue.

Ionising radiation Radon measurements at the workplace made easy

By the end of 2020, the federal states of Germany will have designated radon precautionary areas. Employers in these areas must act quickly and measure radon levels at workplaces in basements and on ground floors. In a new brochure created especially for employers, the BfS explains what must be taken into account when measuring radon levels.
