Ionising radiation Virtual reality: better radiation protection for healthcare professionals

A new VR application is intended to better train medical staff in how to deal with radiation. Particularly during interventional procedures, doctors and radiological specialists are often exposed to high levels of radiation. However, they are not always adequately prepared for this. As part of the departmental research of the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV), the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) has developed an application that can be used to practise in a virtual intervention room.

Optical radiation UV measurement in Hamburg: more regional data for better UV protection

Against the backdrop of climate change, protection from the harmful UV radiation of the sun is becoming increasingly important in many cities. The Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) is expanding its UV measuring network in order to provide citizens with even better information about the current UV exposure in their city and protect them from skin cancer. Together with the Ministry of Justice and Consumer Protection of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, the BfS is putting a new UV measuring station into operation in Hamburg just in time for the start of the Hamburg Harbour anniversary.

Optical radiation Radiation protection for UVC air purifiers only partially ensured

Since the coronavirus pandemic, the disinfection of indoor air and surfaces with UVC radiation has become increasingly important. Publicly accessible buildings in particular have been equipped with UVC air purifiers. These include hotels, restaurants, and medical practices. The devices are also used privately. However, the use of UV radiation also poses certain risks for the skin and eyes. The Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) has therefore had 41 devices tested for their safety as part of a research project.

Ionising radiation BfS: mammography screening programme also beneficial for younger women

Participation in the mammography screening programme is also associated with more benefits than risks for women aged 45 and over. That is the conclusion reached by the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) in its scientific report on “Early detection of breast cancer using X-ray mammography in women under 50”. The BfS recommends reducing the lower age limit for participation in the programme from 50 to 45. Until now, women between the ages of 50 and 69 have been eligible for regular X-ray examinations aimed at the early detection of breast cancer. The new publication has been published in the Federal Gazette and on the BfS website.

Optical radiation UV protection also necessary in spring

UV protection is an important topic in spring – even if sun protection is not on many people's minds at the astronomical start of the season (20 March). Even at this stage of the year, however, UV radiation can be so intense in Germany that protective measures are required, as the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) is keen to point out.
