Optical radiation UV protection is important – also in spring

The sun's rays are once again becoming stronger and enticing people to spend time outdoors. With the start of spring, it's time to think more about UV protection. "Many people are becoming increasingly aware of the importance of UV protection", says Inge Paulini, President of the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS). "But not everyone realises that you should be careful on sunny spring days as well". The UV index is a useful guide for determining when sun exposure becomes excessive. It is a measure of UV radiation that can be found in many weather apps and on the BfS website. "From a value of 3, you should protect your skin and eyes", says Paulini.

Ionising radiation 1,000 free radon measurements in Bonn for research

The radioactive gas radon is an invisible, odourless contaminant that can occur in homes and is one of the most common causes of lung cancer – after smoking, which comes top of the list. The search for indoor radon centres around measurement activities. Now, anyone living in the Bonn city area has the chance to receive a free radon measurement. For a study on behalf of the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS), the expert office Sachverständigenbüro Dr. Kemski is looking for 1,000 households in Bonn who would like to have the radon concentration in their home determined.

Ionising radiation Radon biobank to expand knowledge regarding the effects of radon

The radioactive gas radon is one of the principal causes of lung cancer. But what biological effects does it have on the hematopoietic (blood-producing) system, for example? To facilitate research into this question, the BfS and the UMG are setting up a radon biobank. The UMG collects biosamples such as blood and saliva from people who have been exposed to a known radon activity concentration. The biobank itself will be located at the BfS.
