The risk communication of scientifically active authorities is particularly important here. They form the interface between scientific research and the general public.

News Emergency plan: Preparation for emergencies is improved

Whether an incident in a foreign nuclear power plant, a crime against a nuclear facility, or a nuclear weapon explosion – in a radiological emergency, the procedures must be clearly regulated. This is the purpose of the General Emergency Plan (ANoPl) of the Federal Government of Germany, which has now passed the Federal Council of Germany. The BfS welcomes the emergency plan as an increase in safety in the event of a crisis.

News Radon in uranium mining: Still decades of cancer risk for former em-ployees

From the mid-1940s to 1990, uranium was produced in Saxony and Thuringia for the Soviet nuclear industry. According to a recent analysis of the causes of death of former workers published in the journal Radiation and Environmental Biophysics, deaths from radon exposure have continued into the third decade after the mining operations were ceased.

News Watch out in August: when ozone levels over Germany are low, UV protection is particularly important

The Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) is expecting a further increase in UV radiation for the coming weekend – from Friday onwards – due to a low-ozone event over Germany.
