News The BfS mourns the loss of its founding president

On 15 December 2023, the former President of the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS), Alexander Kaul, passed away at the age of 89. The BfS mourns the loss of a highly esteemed professional and personal leader, who left his mark on the office in a way that only a very few could have done. Kaul advised the Federal Government after the Chornobyl (russ.: Chernobyl) disaster in 1986 and headed the BfS from its foundation in 1989 until 1999.

News BfS becomes a member of Zukunftsforum Öffentliche Sicherheit (ZOES)

With its measurements and situation assessments, the BfS makes a key contribution to public safety in a potential radiological emergency. This has become abundantly clear since the start of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine. To further improve its networking in this area, the BfS recently became a member of Zukunftsforum Öffentliche Sicherheit (ZOES).

News New network for greater radiation protection expertise

Radiation research is having a hard time in Germany: well-known institutes in the area of radiation protection have closed, and relevant training programmes for young scientists are few and far between. At the same time, the country is in need of highly qualified radiation protection experts – for example, as medicine develops increasingly effective radiotherapy procedures for the fight against cancer. In industry, companies are using new types of ultrashort pulse lasers for the machining of materials. Even after the shutdown of nuclear power plants in Germany, emergency preparedness must still be ensured, as facilities in other countries continue to operate close to the border. Both in that context and in relation to many future technologies, there is a need for radiation protection experts with expertise in measurement technology, for example, in order to keep pace with innovation.

News Radiation protection is patient protection – and the latter is non-negotiable

"How is Germany doing as a research location? The answer is: significantly better, from a radiation protection perspective, than statements from the pharmaceutical industry would have us believe," says BfS President Dr Inge Paulini in a guest article in ÄrzteZeitung on 19 October 2023.
