Wireless data transmission in everyday life

With wireless data transmission, information is transmitted either by a radio signal or by light. How safe can users, i.e. adults and children alike, feel with these technologies? How is protection from radiation ensured? In this brochure, radiation protection is examined using the main technologies for voice and data transmission as examples.

Radiological emergency - How to protect yourself

In radiological emergencies, radioactive substances are released in significantly increased quantities. Accidents abroad can also lead to a hazardous situation in Germany. You should be prepared for this. This brochure will help to take appropriate action in an emergency and to protect from radioactivity.

X-ray diagnostics – benefits and risks

It’s hard to imagine modern medicine without X-ray examinations. They are often decisive for diagnosis and therapy. But every X-ray examination involves radiation exposure and thus a certain degree of risk. The "StrahlenschutzKonkret" issue entitled "X-ray diagnostics – benefits and risks" provides information and tips on how to avoid unnecessary examinations.

Competence Centre for Electromagnetic Fields (KEMF)

The Competence Centre Electromagnetic Fields (KEMF) is part of the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS). The KEMF conducts research on radiation protection from static and low-frequency electric and magnetic fields as well as high-frequency electromagnetic fields (EMF) and continuously evaluates the international research situation.

Early detection of diseases

The early detection of diseases is a health policy objective that is associated with the expectation of treating a disease more effectively at an early stage, thereby improving the chances of recovery. The BfS supports and advocates early detection procedures for which the benefit significantly outweighs the risks in general healthcare.
