Schools
You cannot smell it, you cannot see it, you cannot hear it. In order to make the "mystery" of radiation tangible, especially for younger people, we offer various possibilities for getting acquainted with the subject and complementing scientific theory with practical activities.
Find out about our internship opportunities and information days. We also offer various teaching materials on the subject of UV protection (in German only) and electromagnetic fields (in German only) for teachers.
Internship at the BfSShow / Hide
We support interested students in "getting a taste" of a job represented at the BfS by way of an internship.
Interns can gain insight into different areas of work of the Federal Office and deal with a topic on their own responsibility during the internship. This also includes practical work and participation in BfS events (e.g. technical discussions, information events).
Internships are made available within the scope of our capacities.
If you are interested, please contact us.
Radiation Protection Days for school classesShow / Hide
The Federal Office for Radiation Protection invites high school teachers to visit our Neuherberg site with school classes or groups of interested students. The students will be able to learn more about the different fields of work at the Munich site of the Federal Office, such as Monitoring radioactivity in the environment, Measuring radioactive contamination in food, the Effects of ionising radiation on biological tissue or the properties of UV radiation.
The lectures and demonstrations show scientific and practical activities at the BfS. This gives school groups from lower secondary and upper secondary classes an insight into possible future occupational fields. A comparable offer can be made available for 10th grade graduating classes (Realschule). The general requirement is that the topic of radioactivity is part of the relevant curriculum and be dealt with in the running school year.
Due to the Covid-19 Pandemic the invitation was on hold 2020 and 2021. 2022 we were able to proceed again with this promising format, joined by engaged students and motivated colleagues.
Terms
Interested teachers or schools are asked to contact Mr. Axel Malinek by the end of January at the latest: E-Mail. Please describe briefly the following points in your enquiry:
- Number of students
- Grade
- Preferred period of time
- Motivation for the visit: special interests or focal topics in the fields of radiation protection, health and environment
Our preferred time period is beginning May to mid-June, the offer covers three days. Open capacities are assigned in chronological order of entry. For each visitors' group the information day is planned as an one-day event from 9:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. In cases of great interest, BfS reserves the right to limit the time available per school to one day. A possible timetable for the information day is available on request.
For further questions please send an e-mail to amalinek@bfs.de. We are looking forward to hearing from you and to your visit!

Cooperation in high school seminarsShow / Hide
At its Munich / Neuherberg site, the BfS offers high schools the possibility to initiate joint projects, e.g. within the framework of high school seminars. In this way, cooperation between schools and the Federal Office could be established with the aim of:
- providing practice-oriented vocational guidance,
- facilitating the transition from school to vocational training or university studies, and
- intensifying insights into scientific-technical contexts.
Below you will find a selection of topics for project seminars dedicated to study and career orientation at high schools which are suitable for cooperation:
- Biological effects of radiation
- Nuclear accidents: History and impact
- UV radiation and skin cancer prevention
- Flying personnel and cosmic radiation
- Radioactivity in the environment
- Incorporation monitoring in Germany
- Imaging methods in medicine: CT diagnostics and/or positron emission tomography (PET).
Interested teachers or schools are asked to contact Mr. Axel Malinek: E-Mail.
Green Day and Future DayShow / Hide
BfS opens its doors to interested students both on Future Day and on Green Day.
"Future Day" in Germany is also known as "Girls' Day" or "Boys' Day". By way of activities presented in companies, universities and institutions, children and young people can explore occupations that could expand the traditional spectrum of possible occupations for girls and boys. At the BfS, interested students can get to know the topics and fields of work of the Federal Office more closely by way of experiments and group work.
"Green Day", initiated by the Zeitbild Foundation, takes place nationwide every year in November. It is an orientation day for environmental careers and is targeted at students in grade 8 to 13. The Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) also participates in this event each year. Students have the opportunity to learn more about the BfS at the Neuherberg site near Munich.
Interested teachers or schools are asked to contact Mr. Axel Malinek for visits to the Neuherberg site near Munich: E-Mail.
For visits to the BfS sites at Salzgitter and Berlin, please send an e-mail to info@bfs.de.
