Research at BfS

The Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) fulfils tasks that are predominantly assigned to it by law and ordinance and whose fulfilment is fundamentally oriented towards the state of the art in science and technology. For this reason, the BfS Establishment Act states that the BfS conducts research to fulfil its tasks.

This research is oriented solely to the fulfilment of its tasks (so-called departmental research) and in this respect has a "serving function". It thus differs from university research, for example, which is aimed at gaining knowledge per se.

What is the point of radiation research?

Whether artificial or natural radiation (e.g. radon and UV light): as a society, we are regularly faced with the question of which risks we are willing to take and to what extent. A better assessment of the health risks from radiation is essential for the protection of humans. Gaps in knowledge are being closed thanks to radiation research.

Departmental research

The Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) supports the Federal Ministry for the Environment in planning and implementing the research programme both at technical and scientific level. In the area of radiation protection the BfS is responsible for the planning, scientific preparation and supervision as well as for the evaluation of the research projects.

EU research framework programme

The procedure of awarding research funds out of the EU budget is clearly defined in terms of content and time, this procedure being referred to as Research Framework Programme (RFP).

Versuchsaufbau

Research concept

The Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) works to ensure the safety and protection of people and the environment from harm caused by ionising and non-ionising radiation. We are an independent scientific and technical authority in the portfolio of the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV). When performing our tasks, we act within the framework of the technical and legal supervision of the BMUV.
