Completed research projects

In this section you will find completed research projects on natural radiation exposure.

Drawing of a house with three persons and radon in the ambient air

Survey of how the German population deals with radon as a basis for risk communication and reinforcement of protective behaviour

As part of the radiation protection research programme of the Federal Environment Ministry, Gesellschaft für Innovative Marktforschung GmbH (GIM) has investigated how the general public deals with radon in order to develop suitable measures for raising awareness. The study received technical support from the BfS, and the final report is now available.

Research into the levels of radionuclides in drinking water

Study: radionuclide levels in drinking water

In Germany, the activity concentration of radionuclides in drinking water is generally low, although drinking water can exhibit an increased level of natural radioactive substances depending on the bedrock geology. A BfS research project has been examining how the levels of radioactive substances of natural origin that occur in drinking water in Germany vary on a regional and seasonal basis.

Radon precautions for a building

Effect of government support measures on the implementation of radon remediation measures

As part of the departmental research of the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety, the Institute for Futures Studies and Technology Assessment gGmbH (IZT) investigated whether state subsidy programmes for flat owners are an incentive for radon remediation. The BfS provided technical support. The final report is now available.
