Research programme of the Federal Office for Radiation Protection on "Radiation Protection in the Process of Power Grid Expansion"

Comparison of the electric and magnetic fields produced by overhead lines and underground cables Comparison of overhead lines and underground cables

In connection with the energy transition, the existing power grids are being expanded and strengthened. Accompanying this, the research program "Radiation protection during power grid expansion" was initiated by the BfS in 2017. With around 40 projects, research was intensified in order to continuously improve the data situation - as is usual in science - for risk assessment.

The research programme

The existing limit values provide protection - but open questions have to be followed up. Research is aimed at reducing uncertainties in risk assessment.

1. Clarification of possible associations between low-frequency magnetic fields and neurodegenerative diseases

The data available to investigate a possible connection between low-frequency magnetic fields and neurodegenerative diseases will be reviewed on the basis of newly published studies, and the state of knowledge in this field will be updated.

2. Determination of perception and effect thresholds

The threshold values for the perceptibility and biological effects of static and low-frequency electric and magnetic fields are to be determined.

3. Identifying the causes of childhood leukaemia

The significant association between childhood leukaemia and magnetic field exposure will be verified using new epidemiological data and suitable animal models.

4. Investigation of the co-carcinogenicity of exposure to magnetic fields

Indications of a possible co-carcinogenic effect of magnetic fields (e.g. in combination with ionising radiation) are to be reviewed.

5. Investigation of the possible association between exposure to magnetic fields and the rate of miscarriage

The risk of miscarriage as a result of occupational and domestic exposure to magnetic fields will be investigated in an already existing cohort.

6. Investigations of the occurrence, propagation and absorption of corona ions

The data available on the ionisation of air molecules and dust particles on high-voltage power lines is to be updated, and possible health risks are to be reviewed.

7. Exposure analysis, exposure assessment and current data on the exposure of the general public

Dosimetric models for the determination of electric field strengths inside the body are to be improved and data on the exposure of the general population to magnetic fields updated.

8. Risk perception and risk communication

The knowledge and risk perception of citizens and their information needs are identified.

9. Oxidative stress

The data on the possible triggering of oxidative stress by electric, magnetic, and electromagnetic fields is to be reviewed and evaluated.
