Effects of Solar UV Radiation on Humans and the Environment
The sun is the most important source of ultraviolet (UV) radiation. The UV intensity at ground level is sufficiently high to exert big influence on human health as well as on terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. The expected reduction of the atmospheric ozone concentration could further increase this influence. Therefore, the ground-level solar UV radiation is an important environmental parameter which has to be continuously monitored and evaluated from the point of view of radiation protection as well as an ecological parameter (full text in German only).

Acute Health Effects from UV Radiation
Sunburn is the most severe acute skin damage from UV radiation. The short-wavelength part of the spectrum of solar UV radiation (UV-B) is responsible for this adverse health effect. Apart from sunburn other skin injuries as, for example, photoallergies or phototoxic reactions may occur in sensitive persons. Special precaution is recommended after intake of certain drugs that increase the radiation sensitivity of the skin and induce phototoxic or photoallergic reactions and may lead to severe skin diseases. Apart from the skin also the eye can be damaged by UV radiation (full text in German only).

Skin Cancer and Other Chronic Health Effects from UV Radiation
The most severe consequence of chronic exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation is skin cancer representing one of the most commonly diagnosed malignancies worldwide. The increase in UV exposure due to a changing in social behaviour is responsible for the rapid rise in skin cancer incidence. Additional adverse health effects of prolonged exposure to UV radiation are the accelerated aging of the skin, the impairment of the immune system, the development of cataracts and alterations in the retina (full text in German only).
