UV-Messnetz

The incident solar radiation is continuously measured at ten stations in the Federal Republic of Germany with finite instrument resolution of the wave length. The biological effectiveness is calculated from the solar spectrum.

Basic Principles

In 1993 the BfS and UBA (Umweltbundesamt: Federal Environment Agency) started the operation of a network of solar radiation monitors based on four stations. In subsequent years the network has been extended to a nationwide network of solar radiation monitoring stations in cooperation with the DWD (Deutscher Wetterdienst: Germany’s National Meteorological Service) and other associated institutions. UV Index

The UV Index (UVI) is internationally standardized. It is a measure of the intensity of UV radiation reaching the earth's surface on a horizontal area, weighted according to the risk of sunburn. next...

UV Annual Report

In order to develop reliable prognoses of health and environmental consequences of anthropogenic changes of the earth's atmosphere the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) - together with the Federal Environment Agency - operates a network of solar radiation monitors since 1993. In collaboration with five associated institutions the solar UV radiation is now measured continuously and spectrally resolved close to the earth’s surface at all sites being important for radiation climate in Germany (full text in German only). more...
