 Optical Radiation
Optical radiation is subdivided into three areas: ultraviolet radiation (UV), the light visible for man (VIS) and infra-red radiation (IR). In particular UV radiation is useful but also dangerous for man. UV radiation is generated by the sun or artificial radiation sources. Anyone who exposes himself excessively to this type of radiation increases the danger to fall ill from skin cancer later on. It is therefore of particular importance to be careful in this area. Infra-red radiation mainly transmits heat. It is e. g. generated in the sun or in a fire. IR radiation especially warms skin and eyes of man. This effect is used in the medical field, for instance. Here care has to be taken as well to stick to a reasonable level. Too much IR radiation causes damages.

Effects of Solar UV Radiation on Humans and the Environment
The sun is the most important source of UV radiation. The UV intensity at ground level is sufficiently high to exert big influence on human health as well as on terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. The expected reduction of the atmospheric ozone concentration could further increase this influence. Therefore, the ground-level solar UV radiation is an important environmental parameter which has to be continuously monitored and evaluated from the point of view of radiation protection as well as an ecological parameter.
