Information on the licensing procedure for the AVR fuel elements from the Jülich Research Centre

The Jülich Research Centre filed an application for the storage of AVR fuel elements in the Ahaus Interim Storage Facility on 24 September 2009 and, on 4 October 2010 for the transport of these fuel elements to Ahaus. Generally the following applies in case of transport and storage licences according to Atomic Energy Act: What is to be done with the radioactive material is incumbent upon the applicant or, respectively, the owner of radioactive material, which would in this case be the Jülich Research Centre. The applicant needs to furnish proof that the necessary safety is guaranteed for his project. The duration of the current licensing procedure for the Ahaus interim storage facility is due to missing proofs of safety from the side of the applicant.

Investigation into cask crash

Due to improved computer performance, it has become possible in recent years to use computer programs also for presenting high-speed-dynamic impact processes. Following appropriate modelling of the impact partners with the finite-element method (FEM), these finite-element calculations make it possible to present impact waves running through the body under consideration during the impact process.

Safety issues associated with the Gorleben transport cask storage facility (TBL Gorleben)

With the 2nd amending licence for the TBL Gorleben of January 18, 2002, a procedure applied for by the Gesellschaft für Nuklearservice (GNS) was approved. This procedure provides for wooden shock-absorbers on the concrete floor in the area where the casks are loaded and reloaded. For the area outside the shock-absorber a limit has been set to the lifting height of the overhead crane. The procedure applied for by GNS was examined by BfS experts. Since licensing requirements were complied with, BfS granted the licence.
