 Das BfS ist nach dem Atomrecht zuständig für die Genehmigung von Transporten von Kernbrennstoffen und Großquellen. Eine Genehmigung wird nur erteilt, wenn die Einhaltung der Vorschriften des Atomrechts und des Gefahrgutrechts vom Antragsteller nachgewiesen wird.

Licensing of nuclear fuel transports
|
|
|
If a carrier wishes to transport nuclear fuels he requires a transport licence. For this purpose he files an application to the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS). The BfS examines whether the safety criteria are in compliance with the Atomic Energy Act (AtG) § 4 and whether the legal provisions relating to the transport of hazardous materials are met. Which one of the routes applied for is used and when the transport takes place needs to be co-ordinated between the licence holder and the Länder ministries of the interior.

Das Bundesamt für Strahlenschutz (BfS) hat am 1. Juni 2011 einen Transport von elf Behältern mit HAW-Glaskokillen von der Wiederaufarbeitungsanlage in La Hague in Frankreich zum Zwischenlager in Gorleben genehmigt. Die atom- und gefahrgutrechtliche Aufsicht über den Transport obliegt den Landesbehörden, beim Transport durch Niedersachsen also dem Bundesland Niedersachsen.
