The Handbook on Nuclear Safety and Radiation Protection contains legal and sublegal regulatory documents in the field of nuclear safety and radiation protection - as reference only and partly as complete documents - and, in addition, further related regulations and information. In Section 1A the most important national laws are listed, e.g. Atomic Energy Act, Precautionary Radiation Protection Act and Radiation Protection Ordinance (only available in German). English translations of important regulations regarding nuclear safety and radiation protection can be found in Annex A1 of the Handbook.

This handbook has been issued since 1978, at first by the Federal Ministry of the Interior, now by the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (Bundesministerium für Umwelt, Naturschutz und Reaktorsicherheit - BMU). Since 1992 the edition is carried out by BfS. The handbook used to be a loose-leaf collection with half-yearly updates. Since the 30. supplement 12/04 it is provided as (printable) internet edition. Updates are introduced as soon as possible since January 2008.
