Am 11. März 2011 kam es in Fukushima in Japan zu einem starken Erdbeben und nachfolgendem Tsunami. Im Kernkraftwerk Fukushima Daiichi entstanden große Schäden, die mit den vorhandenen Sicherheitssystemen nicht bewältigt werden konnten. Die beim Unfall freigesetzten radioaktiven Substanzen kontaminierten Luft, Boden und Wasser in der Region um Fukushima. Die gesundheitlichen Folgen können noch nicht abschließend bewertet werden.

Expert report on a "renaissance of nuclear energy"

There will be no renaissance of the use of nuclear energy until the year 2030. Instead, shutdowns of aged plants will lead to a decrease in the total number of plants, installed capacity and electricity generation from nuclear power plants. Until 2020, the number of nuclear power plants operated world-wide will probably reduce by 22 per cent, until 2030 by ca. 29 per cent, compared with the starting level in March 2009. This is the result of a study carried out by the Swiss Prognos Institut.

Nuclear Regulatory Issues and Main Developments in Germany

The Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) and the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety jointly prepare in intervals of about half a year a short overview on important legal measures, regulatory issues and other pertinent information about nuclear power reactors, waste management and radiation protection. Important developments on licensing and regulatory oversight of nuclear installations are added.
