Statement on current press reports in regards to the epidemiological study on childhood cancer in the vicinity of nuclear power plants
|
|
Recently, there have been a number of reports on an advisory opinion about the so-called childhood cancer study (KiKK study), which was provided by experts on behalf of the BfS. In those reports some facts were presented wrong or ambiguous.
- The advisory opinion given by Professor Jöckel and his colleagues on the childhood cancer study is not kept under wraps; neither by the Federal Office for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU) nor the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS). It will be – as promised in the German Bundestag session from 16 January 2008 – forwarded to the ecology committee of the German Bundestag together with the BfS’ assessment and will subsequently be published on the BfS’ web pages.
- The number of childhood cancer cases in the vicinity of nuclear power plants of between 121 to 275 cases within a 50 km radius was already stated by the BfS on 10 December 2007 during the presentation of the KiKK study findings (see press release No. 12 dated 10 December 2007).
- The BfS’ assessment of possible causes is as follows: Based on a significant correlation between the risk and the distance to a nuclear power plant location, there are indications for a possible link, but no proof (see Bernd Grosche, Thomas Jung and Wolfgang Weiss: "Häufigkeit von Krebs bei Kindern in der Umgebung von Kernkraftwerken", in: "atomwirtschaft" No. 3/2008, pp. 174-178). The complete article can be found here (in German only).
