The accredited Radon Calibration Service Laboratory 1 of the Federal Office for Radiation Protection offers:

1. Calibration of active measurement systems for radon-222 and short-lived progenies

The BfS Radon Calibration Laboratory is accredited according to norm DIN EN ISO/IEC 17025 for the measurands:
  • Activity concentration of radon-222 in air (CRn) and
  • Potential alpha-energy concentration of the short-lived radon-222 progenies (Po-218; Pb-214; Bi-214) in air volume (Cp).

The measurands are traced back to the national standard at the German Metrology Institute Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB). The best measurement uncertainty, which can be achieved during calibrations, is assigned in table "Measurands, measurand ranges, and best measurement uncertainty" according to the measurement ranges. The calibration is done by comparing the displayed value of the device under test with the reference value of the calibration laboratory. For this purpose, the system under test is exposed within closed containers, in which a reference atmosphere is adjusted with defined values of the measurand and potential influencing factors.

* The extended relative measurement uncertainty is indicated, which is resulting from the standard uncertainty of measurement multiplied with a coverage factor k=2. It has been determined in accordance with DAkkS-DKD-3 "Angabe der Messunsicherheit bei Kalibrierungen", Deutsche Akkreditierungsstelle GmbH, Braunschweig, 2010 - German translation of publication EAL-R2 "Expression of the Uncertainty of Measurement in Calibration". The conventional true value of the measurement quantity lies in the dedicated range of values with 95% probability.

The charges for standard calibration service are listed in table "Standard charges for calibration service". For any other procedures the charges shall be based on time and effort and will be communicated to the customer in advance. No VAT is charged for all services.

2. Calibration of passive, integrating measurement systems for radon-222

The measurand under calibration is the exposure E as mathematical product of the mean radon-222 activity concentration CRn and the exposure duration t. The passive measurement systems will be exposed in a reference atmosphere within a calibration container over a defined time period. Exposure duration and mean radon-222 concentration will be chosen to meet the exposure value requested by the customer. The radon-222 activity concentration, monitored by working standards, will be kept constant to a large extend over the exposure period and can be adjusted to values between 0.4 kBq/m³ and 45 kBq/m³.

Measurement range: 30 kBq•h/m³ - 20000 kBq•h/m³

3. Test of metrological properties of measurement devices

Examinations to check the metrological properties and the impact of several external parameters on the indication of devices measuring radon-222 and its progenies shall be performed on request. The charges for these examinations shall be calculated on time and effort base.

4. Test of measurement methods

Examinations of methods for the measurement of radon-222 and its progenies shall be performed on request. The charges for these examinations shall be calculated on time and effort base.
