Alternative Imaging Techniques
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and ultrasound diagnostics can be used as an alternative to the use of diagnostic X-ray and nuclear medicine procedures. These methods do not rely on X-rays or radiolabeled pharmaceuticals for image generation, but rather on different magnetic and electromagnetic fields and/or mechanical waves. On the other hand, they show different advantages and drawbacks. It therefore depends on the body region to be examined and the specific clinical problem which imaging technique is used best in an individual case. When selecting the best suitable examination method, other factors must also be taken into account such as, the age of the patient, an existing pregnancy, the expected duration of examination (emergency patients), or also a pronounced claustrophobia.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is an of the most important and valuable imaging modalities used in clinical diagnosis. For image generation, different types of magnetic and electromagnetic fields are employed. Because no ionizing radiation is used in MRI, it is generally deemed safer than diagnostic X-ray or nuclear medicine procedures in terms of health protection of patients. The following article gives a short introduction to MRI and summarizes relevant safety aspects.
