Examination of Monitoring Measurements

Gamma Dose Rate Measuring Probe

Every operator of a nuclear facility and, thus, also of a repository, is obliged to carry out monitoring measurements in the vicinity of the installation, which is legally based on the Directive on Emission and Immission Monitoring of Nuclear Facilities (REI). This aims at two purposes: Firstly, to evaluate radiation exposure of man resulting from the discharge of radioactive substances via air and water, secondly to control compliance with the maximum admissible activity discharges and the dose limits.

Diffusor of the Asse repository

The radioactive substances discharged from a repository into the environment via the exhaust air are monitored. Apart from this, especially air, precipitation, surface, drinking water, groundwater and soil, but also plant cover, the agricultural food chain (such as field crops and meat produce), and milk and dairy products are measured. The results are submitted to the Repository Surveillance unit for evaluation.

To achieve a high safety level the environmental monitoring measures are carried out twice: by the repository operator and by an independent measuring facility authorised by the Repository Surveillance unit. The measurement results are compiled by the Repository Surveillance unit and are examined and compared.
