Disposal
Man uses radioactive substances in manifold ways, e. g. for power generation, in the medical field and in industry. In doing so, radioactive waste arises which must be disposed of safely because of the hazards associated with it. In Germany the federation is responsible for final disposal. Emplacement in deep mines and subsequent permanent sealing is considered a suitable solution for the disposal of all types of radioactive waste in Germany.

Statement on the brochure "Kein Endlager in Bayern..."

Das Bayerische Landesamt für Umwelt (LfU) hat in seiner Broschüre "Kein Endlager in Bayern möglich. Geologische Fakten und Hintergründe" die Möglichkeiten einer Standortsuche und -findung in Bayern bewertet und kommt darin zu dem Schluss, dass in Bayern die geologischen Mindestanforderungen an ein Endlager für radioaktive Abfälle nicht erfüllt sind.

Competences in repository supervision
|
Despite occasional statements otherwise, the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) neither executes a supervision under nuclear law in terms of repositories, nor does it supervise itself.
In no case does the BfS approve itself its works. It is rather being comprehensively controlled and supervised by several institutions at the same time.
