Environmental Impact Associated with the Connection of Offshore Wind Parks to the Electricity Network
In a position paper (in German only), the German Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) has summarised the principles for assessing the impact on the environment of submarine cables linking offshore wind parks to electricity networks due to electric and magnetic fields and due to thermal effects. These principles were issued in December 2005 on request by the German Federal Environment Agency from June 2005 on the occasion of the intensive expansion of wind energy plants off shore the German coast which had already started at that time.

Based on state-of-the-art knowledge in science and technology the position paper deals with the electric and magnetic fields emitted by submarine cables during operation and their potential impact on the environment, especially saltwater organisms and on humans, especially the general population. Because of the relatively high heating of the sea bottom due to thermal effects these are considered as well.
