Federal Office for Radiation Protection grants licence for transport of high-level radioactive waste to Gorleben
The Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) granted the licence for the transport of 11 casks with HAW vitrified waste block canisters from AREVA NC in Cap de La Hague to the Gorleben transport cask storage facility which had been applied for on 23 March 2010.

The transport licence was granted after, following intensive examination, BfS had determined that the conditions for granting the licence according to §4 Atomic Energy Act were complied with.

On account of requirements included in the granted transport licence, it is also ensured that the internationally established limit values for radioactive contamination of the transport casks' surface will be kept. For this purpose, measures to avoid and control contamination, transport documentation and obligations to report were established.

Casks of the CASTOR HAW28M type and TN85 type will be used for this licensed transport to the TBL Gorleben.

The licencee, Nuclear Cargo + Service GmbH, will decide when to make use of the licence which is limited until 31 December 2010. According to the BfS requirements, the concrete date of the transport needs to be coordinated with the ministries of the interior of the Länder on the transport route.
