König: We must show an early interest in questions of radiation protection when expanding the electricity grid

The rapid expansion of the power supply system is the prerequisite for fulfilling the Federal government’s ambitious objective to meet 80% of the electricity need in Germany with renewable energies by 2050. In this, attention must be paid to questions of radiation protection from the start. This was emphasised by Wolfram König, President of the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) today during the presentation of his office’s annual report in Salzgitter. more...

Transportation to Russia of radiated fuel elements originating from a research reactor has been authorised

Today, the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) authorised the transportation of radiated fuel elements originating from a research reactor from the interim storage facility at Ahaus to Russia. The authorisation was applied for on 21 July 2010 by Nuclear Cargo + Service (NCS). The authorisation permits the transport of a total of 951 fuel elements in at most 18 cases from type CASTOR MTR 2. more...

Does radiation cause diseases?

Be it mobile phones, cordless phones or WLAN – there’s radiation in all areas of everyday life. As to what effects it can have on man and how it can be measured, the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) provides information at the International Radio Exhibition (IFA), taking place in Berlin September 3-8. As every year, the exhibition will showcase many technical innovations and wireless networks. more...

RWE has transferred electricity volumes from Mülheim-Kärlich to Biblis B

With effect from 28 June 2010, the nuclear power plant operator RWE Power AG has transferred a residual electricity volume of 8,100 gigawatt hours (GWh) from the decommissioned Mülheim-Kärlich NPP (KMK) to the Biblis B NPP. Thus, on 30 June 2010 the residual electricity volume is now 13,989 GWh instead of previously 5,889 GWh. RWE Power has reported the transfer to the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS). more...

Good news for patients: Radiation exposure in X-ray examinations can be reduced

Each X-ray examination is associated with exposure to radiation. To achieve better protection of patients, the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) has been working on avoiding unnecessary X-ray examinations and optimising necessary examinations and at the same time reducing the radiation exposure involved. For this purpose, the BfS introduced diagnostic reference values in August 2003 – as has been provided for in the X-ray Ordinance – , which have now been updated. more...

No enhanced risk of deformity for newborn babies in the vicinity of Biblis and Philippsburg

There is no enhanced risk in the near vicinity of the nuclear power plant sites of Biblis and Philippsburg for toddlers being born with a deformity than there is for children in other regions of Germany. This is the result of a study of the University of Mainz Register of Births carried out on behalf of the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS). In the vicinity of these nuclear power plants, the study determined the frequency of congenital deformities and compared the data with the deformity frequency in a region where there is no nuclear power plant. more...

With healthy skin through the summer

During holiday time many people can hardly wait for the sun to shine – and chances are not bad as actually some very sunny and warm days have been forecast. “To be able to enjoy the weather without risk one should pay attention to the right sun protection. Because the sun also has its dark sides,” Florian Emrich, spokesman of the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS), explained today in Salzgitter. more...

Licence granted to transport highly radioactive waste to the Nord interim storage facility operated by Energiewerke Nord GmbH

The Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) has granted the licence application submitted on 10 June 2009 concerning the transport of five casks containing highly radioactive vitrified waste canisters from the WAK Wiederaufarbeitungsanlage Karlsruhe Rückbau- und Entsorgungs-GmbH, Eggenstein-Leopoldshafen, to the Nord interim storage facility in Lubmin (Mecklenburg-Vorpommern). more...

Sun – that’s safe!

Tanking up on sun in the summer: the mere thought is enough to lift your spirits. Nevertheless a careless approach to the sun can have serious consequences for your health – despite the fact that prevention is simple. With its information campaign “Sun – that’s safe!” the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) aims to demonstrate the best prevention methods and why effective sun protection is crucial. At the launch today BfS President Wolfram König presented the BfS UV infomobile in Lübeck, which will be touring numerous cities in northern and southern Germany in the run-up to the summer holidays. more...

Avoiding sunburn with UV index

“Enjoy the sun – but use your wits. The UV index is an important tool for this,” the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) advises. The UV index (UVI) describes the highest sunburn effective irradiation level caused by the sun during the day on a horizontal level. In the summertime the BfS provides daily prognoses of the UV index. more...

Safety analysis: waste transports to the Konrad final repository pose no risk

The transportation of radioactive waste to the Konrad final repository poses no risk to the population, transportation staff, or the environment. This is the conclusion of a safety analysis conducted by the Gesellschaft für Anlagen- und Reaktorsicherheit (GRS); the findings apply not only to normal transport activities but also to any potential accidents which may occur as a result. The "Konrad Transport Study 2009" thus confirms calculations produced by the GRS as long ago as 1991 on behalf of the Federal Ministry of the Environment and the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS). more...

Decommissioning the Asse mine: the BfS presents comparison of options outcome

Concerning the subsequent handling of the radioactive waste stored at Asse II and according to the present state of knowledge, its retrieval from the mine is now judged to be the best option. This is the outcome of a comparison of options held on the decommissioning of Asse. “We not only face a huge scientific and technical challenge – we will only be able to secure permanent safety with the co-operation of the local community”, stated the president of the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS), Wolfram König, today during the presentation of the outcome in Hanover. Other options examined in addition to retrieval were the backfilling of Asse or the relocation of waste into deeper areas of the mine. According to the present state of knowledge, retrieving the waste would provide a guarantee of permanent safety. more...
