The BfS carries out federal administrative tasks in the following areas:
- Radiation protection including precautionary radiation protection and nuclear safety
- Transport of radioactive material
- Radioactive waste disposal including establishing and operating federal facilities for safeguarding and final disposal, which are assigned to it by the German legislature.
Scientific research is instrumental in executing these tasks properly. The BfS must utilise the current state of science and technology and be able to provide information on it.
BfS’ employees cooperate with universities in Germany and abroad. They research and publish on application-oriented issues within the fields of radiation protection, safety of nuclear disposal and nuclear technology safety. The lists of publications in those areas can be downloaded.
