Epidemiological study on childhood cancer in the vicinity of nuclear power plants (KiKK)

The closer the place of residence to the site of a nuclear power plant the higher the leukaemia risk for children aged 0-4 years. This is the result of a study conducted by the German Childhood Cancer Registry in Mainz, which was initiated and funded by BfS. From 1980 to 2003, 37 children came down with leukaemia within a 5-km-circle around the reactors. 17 cases would have been expected. Thus, about 20 newly diagnosed cases can be attributed to the fact of living within this circle.
