Biological Dosimetry at the BfS

At the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) the national reference laboratory for biological dosimetry in Germany is located. Here dose estimations can be carried out on over-exposed or presumably over-exposed persons using biological indicators. The method used is a chromosome aberration analysis on lymphocytes of peripheral blood.

Approved Laboratories for Incorporation Monitoring (ALIM)

Approved Laboratories for Monitoring of Internal Exposures (ALMIEs)

In Germany, the accredited laboratories (ALMIEs) are responsible for monitoring incorporated radiation as part of physical radiation protection control. These laboratories use standard monitoring methods to determine the body dose of internal radiation exposure.

Virtual Igor produces MCNP geometries

Virtual Igor

Virtual Igor is a computer code which makes the usage of the Saint Petersburg brick phantom in arbitrary user-defined layouts with the Monte-Carlo code MCNP possible. It can be downloaded for free.

BfS Coordinating Office for Internal Monitoring

The Coordinating Office for Internal Monitoring of the Federal Office for Radiation Protection is responsible for the quality assurance of monitoring methods, the standardisation and harmonisation of analytical, measurement and interpretation procedures, awarding research and development work (Ressortplan projects), advising and reporting. In addition, the Office is integrated into the radiological emergency management.

Inside the Radon Chamber

Radon Calibration Laboratory

The Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) operates an accredited calibration laboratory for quality assurance of radon and radon progeny measurements. Beside calibrations the laboratory offers type tests and comparison tests for measurement devices. Furthermore, it carries out scientific investigations on the metrological background, evaluation and improvement of measuring methods.

ProZES

The software ProZES is a tool for experts in claims for compensation of radiation-induced occupational diseases. It calculates the probability that cancer in a specific person was caused by previous occupational radiation exposure. ProZES can now be downloaded.
