Approved Laboratories for Monitoring of Internal Exposures (ALMIEs)

Approved Laboratories for Incorporation Monitoring (ALIM) Approved Laboratories for Incorporation Monitoring (ALIM)Overview of the regional distribution of the ALIM in Germany

Approved laboratories for monitoring of internal exposures (ALMIEs) are qualified measurement services responsible for incorporation monitoring as part of physical radiation protection control in Germany. Common monitoring methods used by these laboratories for the determination of body doses from internal radiation exposure are:

The ALMIEs are accredited by the competent German Federal States (Länder) authorities according to § 169 Radiation Protection Act and thereby have to meet defined quality standards. Among other things, this means that the dosimetry services have to participate in proficiency tests organised yearly by the BfS Coordinating Office for Internal Monitoring (in vivo, in vitro, case studies).

Approved Laboratories for Monitoring of Internal Exposures in Germany

Altogether there are more than 20 laboratories for monitoring of internal exposures in Germany. They are maintained not only by the BfS but also by other bodies such as authorities, research centres, universities, clinics and the industry. These dosimetry services usually carry out monitoring of internal exposures of individuals who are occupationally exposed to radiation such as staff members of nuclear power plants. In radiological emergencies they can also be mobilised for incorporation measurements within the population.

The following table provides a list of all approved laboratories for monitoring of internal exposures in Germany and their contact details (10 in-vitro and 17 in-vivo laboratories).

The approved laboratories for monitoring of internal exposures in Germany are spread across the whole area of the Federal Republic to ensure fast accessibility for users of radioactive substances as well as for the population, for example in the event of a radiological emergency situation. The ALMIEs can perform measurements for institutions situated in the entire federal territory.
