Type approvals for equipment and devices in which radioactive substances are inserted and for installations generating ionizing radiation (according to the German Radiation Protection Ordinance – StrlSchV)

The type approval procedure for equipment and devices in which radioactive substances are inserted and for installations generating ionizing radiation is regulated by §§ 45 to 48 of the Radiation Protection Act together with §§ 16, 17, 24, 25 and 26 Annex V of the Radiation Protection Ordinance – StrlSchV.

According to § 185 (1) 4 of the the Radiation Protection Act the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) is the competent authority for granting type approvals.

Type approvals of X-ray devices and parasitic X-ray emitters (analogue to the German X-ray Ordinance valid until the end of 2018)

With the Radiation Protection Act coming into effect the competence for type approvals of X-ray devices for non-medical purposes as well as of parasitic X-ray emitters (equipment with unintended X-ray emission) has changed. According to § 187 (1) 1 of the Radiation Protection Act the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) is the competent authority for granting these type approvals since 31 December 2018.
