What is RSS?

RSS is a platform-independent format based on the markup language XML and developed for exchanging news and other web contents. RSS is the abbreviation of "Really Simple Syndication". Similar to a news ticker, a so-called "RSS feed" provides recipients with brief information consisting of a headline with a short text and links to the original page of the news.

RSS files do not contain design and layout elements, which allows them to be read and processed independent of any platform. Contents of RSS files can be presented and read in any particular way on websites, in intranets (non-public computer networks), or desktop software (such as in screen savers or the like).

With the help of a "RSS-Reader", which may also be included in e-mail programs or Internet browsers (partly by installing appropriate add-ons), one can read RSS files and track changes on a website. There are applications free of charge and commercial ones for reading RSS files.

From the user’s point of view, the major benefit of RSS is that time is saved. Without having to visit the sites, the user gets a quick survey of what has changed and whether they have been updated.

How to subscribe to RSS?

As soon as you have installed an RSS reader, you can subscribe to a feed. Unlike a subscription to a newsletter, you needn’t provide your e-mail address.

The Federal Office for Radiation Protection offers several different feeds on this site. Each feed has its own address (URL). Add this address to your RSS reader.

Move your mouse to the respective feed and press the right mouse button. In the choice box, select "Copy Link" or "Copy Link Address". Then, add the address at the respective place in your RSS-Reader. Press the right mouse button and then click "Paste" or use the shortcut Ctrl+V. Now you have subscribed to the feed and can use the offer.

You will find details on the usage of your RSS reader in the manual or the help function of the respective program.
