Ionising radiation Radon measurements at the workplace made easy

By the end of 2020, the federal states of Germany will have designated radon precautionary areas. Employers in these areas must act quickly and measure radon levels at workplaces in basements and on ground floors. In a new brochure created especially for employers, the BfS explains what must be taken into account when measuring radon levels.

By the end of this year, the federal states will designate so-called radon precautionary areas, which will in future be subject to stricter requirements when it comes to protection against the radioactive gas radon. With this in mind, Jochen Flasbarth, State Secretary for the Environment, and Inge Paulini, President of the BfS, have highlighted the importance of protection against radon in buildings.

Overall, the radioactive contamination of drinking water in Germany is considered to be low. However, the BfS has commissioned a new research project in order to examine whether special protective measures are called for due to exceptions in certain regions. This evaluation will entail a specific examination of current data.

Although radioactive contamination from the Chernobyl reactor disaster is now only present at low levels in most foodstuffs in Germany, some species of wild mushrooms – particularly in southern Germany – can still be highly contaminated with radioactive caesium. That is according to the latest mushroom report by the BfS.
