News 50 years of measuring ambient radiation

In the early 1970s, in wake of an impending nuclear weapons attack, Germany began to set up a nationwide network for measuring radioactivity. Now, 50 years later, 1,700 probes throughout Germany ensure that a possible increase in radioactivity would not go unnoticed. On 19 and 20 March 2024, the BfS honoured the 50th anniversary of the measuring network with a ceremony and a specialist event in Berlin.

In everyday life, people are constantly surrounded by electromagnetic fields. For example, these fields occur when people use a mobile phone or electrical household appliances. Based on studies, the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) assumes that there are no risks to health if the limits applicable in Germany are observed. However, surveys reveal that around 20% of the population say they are concerned about the possible effects of such fields – not only on people but also on the environment.

News The BfS mourns the loss of its founding president

On 15 December 2023, the former President of the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS), Alexander Kaul, passed away at the age of 89. The BfS mourns the loss of a highly esteemed professional and personal leader, who left his mark on the office in a way that only a very few could have done. Kaul advised the Federal Government after the Chornobyl (russ.: Chernobyl) disaster in 1986 and headed the BfS from its foundation in 1989 until 1999.
