News 10 September: Germany-wide Alert Day

At 11 am on 10 September 2020, sirens will sound across Germany in a nationwide alarm test using the available warning systems – the first such test since reunification. These systems are used to warn the German population of threats such as natural hazards, hazardous weather conditions, accidents at chemical plants, or fires. A warning is also issued in the event of radiological emergencies.

On 3 September 2020, BfS President Inge Paulini had a meeting with Jean-Christophe Niel, Director General of the French Institute for Radiological Protection and Nuclear Safety (IRSN), to discuss current radiation protection issues. Key topics included the research focuses of the two institutions.

News Survey started on UV protection in daycare centres and schools

Children are particularly sensitive to UV radiation and therefore need special protection. A nationwide survey is being conducted in order to provide an overview of what is already being done in daycare centres and schools to ensure sufficient shade in school yards and playgrounds.

News Forest fires in Chernobyl no danger for Germany

Das BfS weist darauf hin, dass die derzeitigen Waldbrände in dem Gebiet von Tschernobyl keine Gefährdung für Deutschland darstellen. Dies gilt auch für den Fall, dass noch größere Waldflächen von den Bränden betroffen wären. Das BfS beobachtet die Situation kontinuierlich.

The BfS would like to point out that the current forest fires in the Chernobyl area pose no threat to Germany. This also applies if even larger areas are affected by the fires. The BfS is continually monitoring the situation.
