Together with the Ukrainian nuclear regulatory authority (State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate of Ukraine), staff of the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) conducted a measurement exercise in the 30-kilometre-zone around the Chornobyl (Russian: Chernobyl) nuclear power plant (Ukraine) from September 3 to September 7, 2018. Stefan Seifert, physicist, Daniel Esch, physicist, and Hermann John, in-situ technician, reported about the exercise in a video diary. Here are some more impressions.

Pursuant to the Precautionary Radiation Protection Act, the BfS is responsible for the large-scale measurement of environmental radioactivity and for the airborne detection of radiation sources. For this purpose, the Berlin and Munich sites have each two operational, ready-to-use, airworthy, gamma spectrometric measuring systems. In order to ensure their operational readiness, a joint measurement exercise of the BfS and the federal police force is carried out annually for which the federal police force or, respectively, disaster control helicopters are equipped with the BfS measuring systems.
