Research projects on strong static magnetic fields

People get in touch with strong static magnetic fields for example during magnetic resonance imaging, a diagnostic method used in medicine. The devices used actually in clinical practice have predominantly a magnetic flux density of 1.5 or 3 Tesla. In research, devices with 7 and 9.4 Tesla are already tested. In the future, these devices will be introduced in medical diagnostic. The question, if these stronger fields affect the health of patients and medical stuff, has been investigated in three research projects commissioned by the BfS.

Studies on Terrestrial Trunked Radio (TETRA)

BfS and the Federal Agency for Digital Radio of Security Authorities and Organisations (BDBOS) reached an agreement to pay adequate attention to basic requirements of radiation protection and to information and risk communication when setting up the new digital voice and data communication system for security authorities. The terms of condition are that BDBOS finances research projects aiming at clarifying open scientific questions for risk evaluation of the electromagnetic fields used for TETRA. Two research projects were carried out which are already completed.

Effects of low frequency magnetic fields on the hematopoietic system, the immune system and the central nervous system

The issue was examined at the Fraunhofer Institute for Toxicology and Experimental Medicine (ITEM) in Hannover within the scope of a research project commissioned by the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS).

German Mobile Telecommunication Research Programme (DMF)

The German Mobile Telecommunication Research Programme (DMF) had been initiated by the Federal Ministry for the Environment (BMUB, former BMU) and the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS). The Programme was funded with 17 million euros, equally shared by the Federal Ministry for the Environment and the network operators.
