Handbook on Nuclear Safety and Radiation Protection

The Handbook on Nuclear Safety and Radiation Protection contains legal and sublegal regulatory documents in the field of nuclear safety and radiation protection - as reference only and partly as complete documents - and, in addition, further related regulations and information. In Section 1A the most important national laws are listed, e.g.

  • Atomic Energy Act,
  • Precautionary Radiation Protection Act, and
  • Radiation Protection Ordinance.

The Federal Office for the Safety of Nuclear Waste Management (BASE) summarizes these legal texts in the Handbook on Nuclear Safety and Radiation Protection. It took over this task on 30 July 2016 from the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS). English translations of important regulations regarding nuclear safety and radiation protection can be found in Annex A.1.

Departmental research

The Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) supports the Federal Environment Ministry in planning and implementing the research programme both at technical and scientific level. In the area of radiation protection the BfS is responsible for the planning, scientific preparation and supervision as well as for the evaluation of the research projects.
